days again

can you still remember when we first met?
it was so many years ago
do you recall where you found my number
and called me up for fun?
and would you look back at those days and say
they were only some kind of joke?
but please
remember I’m your friend
though I never held your hand
though we never had been near

when days were warm and nights were long
we talked until the break of dawn (and on, and on)
as hearts broke up and skies fell down
we had ourselves and our songs (that we shared)
maybe we were soul-linked in some way
we didn’t understand a bit
so please
remember you were my friend
though you never took a chance
though we never had been near

it’s all the same when you go away for days again (and again)
could you have the courtesy to say ‘goodbye’ for once?
and when you go would you be back as soon as you can
because there’s still someone out there caring for you

I still adore your open heart and the weak spots
that made you so strong
your ability to ignore the things that made you cry
and to live your life through this
you reminded me too well of myself and gave me
aims of the highest standards out there
you were like
the sister I never had
more close than anyone else
always there to give a warm welcome

no, we can’t deny the bad sides of us
driving us to strange deeds in our lives
making you go blind – wasting all your time
with some stupid games
kicking me out of this world – no I haven’t heard
that this is just the way it is
do you hear me?
can’t we be like friends
even though we never met
even though you are not here

it’s all the same when you go away for days again (and again)
could you have the courtesy to say ‘goodbye’ for once?
and when you go would you be back as soon as you can
because there’s still someone out there caring for you

hey, Angie, don’t you see that it’s me here trying
to reach and thank you for the good and some bad times, honey
don’t let a friend down like that – not quite the appropriate style
write a few words and it’ll all be fine on my side
(be fine on my side, be fine, on my side, be fine, on my side)

I tend to play the fool sometimes by thinking of your
laughter and fine words that you wrote
you can’t just go and pop back in as if
nothing ever happened in between these months
but then again it’s all the same you said we were not
what I thought we were for years

we were no real friends you said
though we knew us in and out
though we’ve always had been near
