A really tricky issue with DPI is how to avoid port checks inside the code while making sure the code doesn’t produce false positives. For example, it’s not possible to reliably detect data transfer connections in FTP. If one doesn’t add port 20 to the equation, it’s not possible to detect those transfers properly. That’s just one of a couple of cases where one is inclined to use the port-based approach to make the detection more reliable. But here comes the kicker: It makes hiding traffic easy while also providing the administrator with a false sense of security.
About Chance
J. E. Littlewood wrote about the law of truly large numbers in his 1986 book, Littlewood’s Miscellany. He said the average person is alert for about eight hours every day, and something happens to the average person about once a second. At this rate, you will experience 1 million events every thirty-five days. This means when you say the chances of something happening are one in a million, it also means about once a month. The monthly miracle is called Littlewood’s Law.

you stand there framed, joking, while on the inside I’m choking, but say ‘hi’
with a flaming sense of redness and that black dress but I digress, never mind
I’d like to kill my good friend, but I thank him for the time spent with your surprise
well I guess you got invited, though I couldn’t have decided, it’s a mess
my home is sorta dirty, but you feel that it is worthy, quite polite
so after some more beer and white wine we do end up here, that makes two
About Being Right
The Watson Selection Task is an example of how lousy you are at logic, but you are also filled with beliefs that look good on paper but fall apart in practice. When those beliefs fall apart, you tend not to notice. You have a deep desire to be right all of the time and a deeper desire to see yourself in a positive light both morally and behaviourally. You can stretch your mind pretty far to achieve these goals.
Eiskalt erwischt
About Sensible Negotiation
There never was a truer maxim than: ‘If you don’t ask, you don’t get.’ But just because somebody asks for something, it doesn’t mean it has to be given. If it’s reasonable and settles things without too much aggravation, monetary sacrifice (if relevant) or bad feeling, fine. But if both parties are dissatisfied then the equation is not right. Remember — it’s a game with two winners.
Uninvited Guests
It was a day like any other in this slow summer. He had just started to wind down from an interesting Friday. A friend called, but he really wasn’t in the mood to go out. “That’s fine, but listen: I’m coming round in a bit and we’ll go grab a beer somewhere.” Alright then, he thought and carried on with doing nothing of worth. The flat looked dirty and unorganised. After all he had moved in a couple of weeks ago and not all of the furniture had been bought yet. It’s alright, he thought again, because I’m the only one who sees this.
